Family-Friendly Bahamas Vacation: Staying at Atlantis Resort
In summer 2024, we finally checked the Bahamas off our family bucket list. We had dreamed of this trip for years, and it turned out to be the perfect family getaway. Travel was surprisingly easy—a short flight to Miami, followed by a quick hop to Nassau. The warm welcome of steel drums and Bahamian dancers at the airport instantly set the tone for our vacation.
Traveling with kids always brings new joy, and seeing the Bahamas through their eyes reminded us why family adventures are so special.
Staying at Atlantis
For our first visit, we chose Atlantis, known for being kid-friendly. We booked a one-bedroom suite at The Reef, slightly removed from the main resort but offering spacious accommodations with a kitchenette. My husband and I had our own room, while the boys loved having the pullout couch and their own space in the living room. Two full bathrooms made mornings so much smoother.
We had reserved an ocean-view suite, but upon check-in, none were available. Instead, we were given a partial ocean-view room for the first night with a credit back for the difference. It was a great reminder of why using a travel advisor matters—had we booked with one, our room would have been guaranteed. Surprisingly though, we ended up loving the view of the harbor. Watching the massive cruise ships arrive and depart each day was an unexpected highlight.
Having a kitchenette also came in handy—we arranged a grocery delivery for quick breakfasts and easy lunches to take poolside.
First Impressions
After a smooth check-in, we dropped our bags and headed straight for the ocean. The water was breathtakingly clear—pure magic. The kids swam for hours each day, spotting turtles, stingrays, and colorful fish with their goggles.
The beach near our suite had Cascades, a beach bar serving lunch and drinks. While the food was fine, it wasn’t anything memorable, so we mixed things up by walking to Shake Shack a few times. That location has a giant aquarium in the middle, which was a hit with the boys while we enjoyed burgers and fries.
Exploring Atlantis
Atlantis is truly a world of its own. From marine habitats and Dolphin Cay to the Aquaventure Waterpark, there’s endless exploring to do.
We toured the marine exhibits and were amazed by the barracudas, sawfish, and eels. The Estuary Lagoon was another highlight, especially crossing the rope bridge. The Lagoon Bar & Grill was a nice spot to grab a bite while taking it all in.
Of course, the kids couldn’t wait to try the waterpark. While our youngest wasn’t a fan of the bigger slides, we found rides for everyone. Favorites included:
The Serpent Slide – twisting through dark tunnels before splashing into a lagoon surrounded by marine life.
The Drop & The Surge – thrilling but family-friendly.
The Rapids River – not your average lazy river; waves, drops, and rapids made it a blast.
Even in July, lines were short, and we got to ride multiple times without long waits.
To get a break from the water, we wandered through the casino and took a stroll around Marine Village, which quickly became a family favorite. Between the shops, restaurants, and an ice cream stop for the kids, it had a little something for everyone. I also loved browsing the Crystal Court Shoppes—filled with gorgeous designer stores that were so fun to window shop (and maybe splurge a little!)
Excursions are easy to book right on-site, and one morning we signed up for a snorkeling trip. The boat pulled right up to the resort, making it super convenient—we just walked down and hopped on with one other family. We sailed past celebrity homes and enjoyed a fantastic view of the harbor and beyond. The instructors were fantastic, providing all the gear and walking us through how to use it with helpful tips. Once we were out in the water, we were amazed by the colorful fish and marine life all around us. Sharing that underwater adventure with our kids was definitely one of the highlights of the trip.
Dining Experiences
On property, we tried Chop Stix, but weren’t overly impressed, so we ventured off-site for dinner a couple of times.
Latitudes: Just a short taxi ride away, with pasta, steak, and sushi on the menu. The food was wonderful, the service attentive, and the views were gorgeous.
JWB Prime Steak & Seafood: A high-end choice recommended by friends. The guys loved their steaks, while I enjoyed fresh sushi. The atmosphere was sophisticated, and the service was phenomenal.
Most nights, we wrapped up with a cocktail or glass of wine at one of Atlantis’ many bars while the boys happily entertained themselves with their Nintendo Switches. It was a perfect way to wind down as a family.
Final Thoughts
Atlantis was the perfect introduction to the Bahamas, especially with kids. While we’re glad we experienced it and can check it off our bucket list, next time we’d love to stay at the SLS Baha Mar or Grand Hyatt, and explore more of the outer islands—particularly Harbour Island.
The Bahamas’ beauty is unmatched, and there’s so much more left to discover.
Travel TIps
Choose Your Tower Wisely
Atlantis is huge, and where you stay makes a difference:
The Royal: Iconic pink towers at the heart of the resort. Closest to the casino, Aquaventure Waterpark, and the Dig (aquarium). Great if you want to be in the middle of the action.
The Reef: Luxury residential-style suites with kitchenettes. Located near the beach and The Cove. Quieter, but a longer walk (or shuttle) to the main resort and waterpark.
The Cove: Upscale and trendy, with an adults-only pool and beach club. Best for couples or families with older kids.
Coral Towers: Mid-range, near Marina Village (restaurants, shops, and ice cream). Also close to Dolphin Cay.
Harborside Resort: Villa-style accommodations across the marina. Great for larger families or longer stays, but requires a shuttle or water taxi to reach the main resort.
Waterpark Access
Guests staying at The Royal are closest to Aquaventure, the main waterpark with slides and the Rapids River.
If you’re at The Reef or The Cove, plan for a bit of a walk or take the shuttle—it’s worth it, but pack patience if you have little ones.
Best Beaches & Pools
Cascades Pool: Closest to The Reef and The Cove, quieter and family-friendly.
Royal Baths Pool: By The Royal, lively with music and activities.
Cove Pool: Adults-only, upscale vibe, cabanas and DJs.
Mayan Temple Pool: Right by the famous water slides (Leap of Faith). Perfect if your kids want quick slide access.
Casino & Nightlife
The Atlantis Casino is located between The Royal and The Cove, so if nightlife or gaming is a priority, those are your best bet.
Bars and lounges are sprinkled throughout, with more lively options near The Royal.
