Our Family Adventure at Hawk’s Cay Bay, Duck Key, FL
In the spring of 2021…
In spring of 2021, with travel restrictions easing and spring break calling, we set our sights on the Florida Keys and booked a stay at Hawk’s Cay Bay. The promise of sunshine, turquoise water, and island time felt like exactly what our little family needed.
The Journey
We flew out of Austin, TX with a layover in Nashville, only to face delays and cancellations that finally got us into Ft. Lauderdale around 9 p.m. By then, every traveler seemed to be competing for rental cars. While my husband waited over three hours in line, I did my best to keep our two boys (ages 6 and 4 at the time) entertained despite their growing restlessness.
At last, we secured a Jeep instead of the car we originally reserved. “Perfect,” we thought—picturing ourselves cruising the Overseas Highway with the top down and ocean breezes rolling in. That is, until we were exiting the airport, figuring out which lane we needed to take, and the Jeep’s top flew off in the middle of the highway! My husband managed to pull over safely, dash into the darkness, and recover it. With bleary eyes and a mix of laughter and disbelief, we reattached the roof and carried on.
By the time we reached our hotel for the night, it was nearly 1 a.m. To top things off, the hotel had released our third-party booking because we arrived after midnight. After 45 minutes of back-and-forth, a kind receptionist finally handed us a key. Exhausted but grateful, we fell into bed, ready for the real adventure to begin.
First Impressions of Hawk’s Cay
The next morning, Jeep top secured and spirits restored, we headed south toward Duck Key. Pulling into Hawk’s Cay Bay felt like stepping into paradise: lush greenery, sparkling water, and a sense of calm after the chaos of travel.
Our three-bedroom villa was the perfect retreat, complete with a full kitchen, dining room, cozy living space, and a wraparound screened porch. It instantly felt like home.
Family Fun at the Resort
Our days were filled with sun and saltwater. The boys loved the Pirate Pool, with its splash zones and kid-friendly fun, while we soaked up the sun in nearby lounge chairs. We spent hours at the resort’s lagoon—paddleboarding, building sandcastles, and simply playing in the water.
Meals were a mix of convenience and indulgence. Having a kitchen made it easy to whip up simple dinners when the kids were tired, but we also treated ourselves to meals at Angler & Ale, a favorite spot on property.
A Fishing Adventure
Since our family loves to fish, we set out one day for a charter out of a nearby marina. It was an unforgettable experience—we caught plenty of fish, even a small shark! Back at the resort, we took advantage of the “hook and cook” service at Angler & Ale, where the chef prepared our catch into a delicious meal. Our boys still say it was the best dinner of the trip.
Final Thoughts
What started with travel chaos turned into a spring break full of laughter, sunshine, and unforgettable memories. Hawk’s Cay Bay gave us the perfect mix of family fun and Florida Keys charm—a place we’ll always remember as one of our most adventurous and rewarding trips.
Travel Tips
Timing Your Trip
Best Season: Spring (March–May) and early fall (September–October) bring warm weather, fewer crowds, and better rates than peak winter.
Hurricane Season: June–November can be riskier for storms, but prices are lower and the resort is prepared for quick recovery.
Sunset Views: For the most stunning sunsets, head to the Dolphin Deck or the Pilar Bar.
Choosing Your Stay
Villas vs. Rooms: If you’re traveling with family or a group, the villas with kitchens are worth the upgrade. For couples, the adults-only Oasis Cay area offers more privacy and tranquility.
Request Location Wisely: Villas closer to the main resort are convenient, but if you want quiet, ask for one by the Harbor or Marina.
Activities & Experiences
Book Dolphin Encounters Early: Spots for dolphin experiences fill up quickly—reserve ahead of time, especially during school holidays.
Water Sports: Early morning tends to have calmer water for kayaking, paddleboarding, or jet skiing.
Fishing Charters: If you love fresh seafood, book a charter and try the “hook and cook” dining at Angler & Ale.
Dining Tips
Don’t Skip Salt + Ash: A newer dining addition with wood-fired dishes and a chic vibe. Perfect for a nicer night out.
Casual Eats: Grab lunch at the Tiki Grill by the pool—you’ll want to try the fish tacos.
Reservations: Make dinner reservations at least a few days before arrival, especially for Angler & Ale.
For Families
Kids Club & Activities: Hawks Cay has one of the best kids’ programs in the Keys. Drop them off for supervised fun while you enjoy the spa or adults-only pool.
Pirate Ship Pool: Perfect for little ones—pack extra swim gear because they won’t want to leave.
For Relaxation
Spa Appointments: Book Calm Waters Spa treatments before your trip—they book up quickly on weekends.
Adults-Only Oasis: Head to the secluded pool for cocktails and peace while families enjoy the main lagoon.
Getting Around
Bring or Rent a Car: While Hawks Cay is a full resort, you’ll want wheels if you plan to explore Marathon, Islamorada, or take a day trip to Key West.
Grocery Stop: If you’re staying in a villa, swing by Publix in Marathon on the way to stock up.
